In some parts of the world, such as Japan, elderly care has been a significant focus for robotics development for decades. However, other markets are now starting to explore this space as well.
A Growing Trend in Elderly Care Robotics
Laboratory Robotics’ home assistive system is one example of this trend in the United States. Another notable example is Intuition Robotics from Tel Aviv, which has been promoting a "companion" robot since 2016.
ElliQ: A Robot Designed for Elderly Care
ElliQ, developed by Intuition Robotics, was finally released last March and has gained some success through partnerships with assistive care facilities. The robot’s debut was strong enough to attract investors, as Intuition raised $25 million this summer.
Latest Funding Round Brings Total Raise to $83 Million
The latest funding round, led by Toyota’s Woven Capital growth funding, brought the startup’s total raise up to $83 million. Much of this new capital has gone into ElliQ 3, the latest version of the robot.
ElliQ 3: Upgrades and Features
ElliQ 3 features design tweaks, more powerful hardware, and — most notably — generative AI integration. The latter is a given for any announcement at this year’s CES event in Las Vegas.
Design and Hardware Updates
The footprint of ElliQ 3 is one-third smaller than its predecessor, and it weighs 1.3 pounds less. Memory has been increased, and the on-board MediaTek octa-core processor has been updated. These hardware updates appear primarily focused on improving ease-of-use and the ability to scale up manufacturing.
Generative AI: The Future of Conversational Capabilities
Generative AI is a major buzz phrase at CES this year, and it’s likely to be a significant trend in 2024 as well. Intuition says it’s leveraging LLMs (Large Language Models) to improve the system’s conversational capabilities.
Improving Conversational Abilities
The company notes that users can now discuss a virtually infinite number of topics in a more natural and detailed manner with ElliQ. This includes both set and open-ended conversations, as well as improving ElliQ’s ability to intuit the nature of requests based on context.
Exploring Other Avenues with Generative AI
Intuition is also exploring other avenues with generative AI, including the ability to paint or write poems together, activities that contribute to cognitive wellness and creativity. Sharing these creations with loved ones or the greater ElliQ user community also contributes to social wellness, decreases loneliness, and amplifies a sense of recognition.
The Future of Elderly Care Robotics
ElliQ 3 is just one example of how generative AI is being integrated into elderly care robots. As this technology continues to evolve, it’s likely that we’ll see even more innovative solutions in the future.
CES and the Future of Robotics
CES has always been a hub for innovation, and this year’s event is no exception. With the integration of generative AI, we can expect to see even more exciting developments in the field of robotics.
